Beginning Backpacking Class 2019

One of the most popular classes offered by SOLAR members, the Beginning Backpacking Class teaches trip planning, equipment, food, and other topics to get you ready for the backcountry. If you a) have never backpacked and have always wanted to try it; b) are new to the club and want to make friends and meet people; or c) want a refresher or just need an excuse to backpack – this is the class for you!
Class Fee**: $120 (SOLAR members, cash/check); $128 (SOLAR members, meetup); $140 (Non-SOLAR members) includes textbook, class handbook (available online or can be provided to you upon request), camping fees for both practicals, and dinner at Practical 1. Sign up on Meetup or at the May/June/July SOLAR general meetings. Sign up deadline is: August 3, 2019. You can pay Krisanne in person as well, SOLAR members get a discount for paying by cash/check ($120). Non-SOLAR members should contact me directly: email@example.com.

LOCATION: St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church, 27475 Five Mile Rd., Livonia, MI
Field Day: Saturday, September 7
LOCATION: Maybury State Park (A Michigan State Recreation Passport is needed to enter Maybury State Park).
Practical 1: Saturday-Sunday, September 14-15 (Friday, September 13 is optional).
LOCATION: Brighton Recreation Area (A Michigan State Recreation Passport is needed to enter Brighton Rec Area).
Practical 2: Friday (travel day)-Sunday, September 27-30
LOCATION: Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore (to ensure students are ready for this Practical, student may only miss one (1) classroom session and must attend the Brighton Practical)
SOLAR members – SOLAR gear is available to borrow (backpack, tent, sleeping bag, sleeping pad, stove, water filter; a complete list of gear available to borrow can be found on SOLAR’s website at: http://www.solaroutdoors.com/downloads/solar_equipment_list.pdf). Items not available to borrow: clothing, hiking boots, rain gear, compass, food for practicals (exception is Practical 1 dinner).
SOLAR has a No Refunds policy, however, please see Krisanne Schmidt to discuss before registration cutoff (Aug. 3) if you find you are unable to take the class.
